Comcast demands Netflix toll amongst net neutrality quarrels

Net neutrality is once again at issue. Comcast is charging Netflix for network access. Many network providers claim that they can self-police. Comcast’s new “traffic toll” is leading many to question if this is really possible. There is a rumor that the Federal Communications Commission might vote on net neutrality in December. Resource for this article – Comcast demands Netflix toll amongst net neutrality arguments by Money Blog Newz.

Comcast cost going to Netflix

Television, internet and telephone services are offered through Comcast. An on-demand and pay-per-view online film service is used by Comcast too. Netflix can be delivered to your computer streaming with Level 3. Comcast has decided to fee Level 3, and therefore Netflix, a “recurring fee in exchange for allowing Netflix streaming media … to flow unfettered.” Comcast customers won't be able to use the Netflix service unless Netflix pays for it.

The net neutrality issue with Comcast and Netflix

Net neutrality has to do with the internet traffic. It’s all treated equally with this. The FCC had to sanction Comcast this year after BitTorrent file sharing was "throttled" or slowed down. A fight was began when Comcast disagreed. It said traffic equality was not in any kind of law or rule. Because of the strains the Comcast network would go through to have Netflix streaming, it is charging Netflix a fee. Several say the competition with Comcast's own streaming network is the real reason for the charge to Netflix.

Controversy from net neutrality

The Comcast/Netflix fee is said by some to be a fantastic example of the importance of net neutrality. No traffic should be treated better or worse than other traffic on the internet. Making their own deals is what internet providers should be able to do like cable television. This is suggested by large internet providers like Verizon, AT&T and Comcast. Do you have an opinion? What is it? The FCC has the choice of voting for net neutrality or letting companies regulate themselves. Which is right?
