Carnival Splendor catches fire on Mexican cruise

An engine room flames aboard the Carnival Splendor set the cruise ship adrift 55 miles off the coast of Baja CA Monday. The Carnival Splendor flames cut all ship’s power. The vessel had been becalmed with no air conditioning, hot meals, toilets or telephones. The U.S. Coast Guard and also the U.S. Navy carrier Ronald Reagan came to help as a fleet of tugs had been dispatched to fetch the ailing boat.

Carnival Splendor’s impolite waking up

The Carnival Splendor fire broke out about 6 a.m. Monday in the aft motor room of the 952-foot long, 113,000-ton cruise ship. The upper decks begun filling with passengers who had to leave their cabins. Nobody on the ship was injured as the fire was put out. Passengers were able to move around the ship as they pleased after this. Emergency generators supplied power and ultimately toilet service and cold running water were restored. Bottled water and cold food were there for the consumers instead of the buffets.

Getting coast guard and aircraft there

The Carnival Splendor left the Carnival Cruise Lines home of Long Beach, CA. It then was about 200 miles south of San Diego when it caught fire. An HC-130 Hercules aircraft and three Coast Guard cutters were sent to help the ship. The USS Ronald Reagan had been training however instead left for the stage on command of the U.S. Navy. In a statement the Navy said helicopters from the carrier were dropping off 35 pallets of supplies. Tugs were expected to reach the Carnival Splendor later Tuesday and tow the ship to Ensenada. Reaching the Mexican port could take a really long time.

Free luxury cruise given from Carnival

All of the passengers from the Carnival Splendor will be bused to Long Beach once it gets to land. The seven-day cruise of the Mexican Riviera which involved stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas was cancelled. Passengers are able to get a full refund, reimbursement for transportation costs to Long Beach and a Carnival Cruise the very same price as the voyage they were on all from Carnival Cruise.
