Infamous lawman Joe Arpaio on trial by the Justice Department

The state of Arizona continues to be the center of lots of debate through recent years. The problem over SB1070, which allows authorities to check the immigration status of any person they suspect can be illegal, is nevertheless unsettled, as the Obama administration has challenged the constitutional grounds of the law, which Governor Jan Brewer has decried. The Department of Justice decided to such Joe Arpaio, Sheriff of Maricopa County. This just heats up the battle between Arizona and also the federal government. The Justice Department says that Sheriff Joe Arpaio has not cooperated with an investigation of civil rights abuses.

Joe Arpaio discriminating

The investigation began to fight tactics Sheriff Arpaio supposedly used. Evidently he wanted to “sweep” illegal immigrants by only targeting Hispanics, whether or not they were legal. The Los Angeles Times reports that Hispanic areas were targeted by the Maricopa County Sheriff deputies that stopped every person for anything. When there with the people, deputies had one job to complete. They were expected to check immigration status. Doing this was expected by everybody. It was even expected before Arizona immigration law was in place. The Justice Department asked Sheriff Arpaio for documentation of these sweeps. He was unwilling to give it up. He would let federal investigators in the building or give them the material wanted.

No stranger to lawsuits

The Maricopa Sheriff has had lawsuits before. His jail is called Tent City and has tents within the desert with high fences with barbed wire around it, and many have sued him for family dying in this jail. There is also an ongoing investigation to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office including Sheriff Arpaio by the grand jury. This is happening, reports ABC because of corruption. Through a year ago the Justice Department first requested documentation from the Office. Attorneys suing Arpaio’s department were intended to be able to get a hold of the documents that a federal judge found the Sheriff’s Office had destroyed.
