Koran fires opposed by President Obama and others

The plans made by a Florida church to burn copies of the Koran has caused an enormous controversy. American authorities and world leaders have announced their dislike and outrage at the proposed action. President Barack Obama is now one of the many asking for the Dove World Outreach Center Church and Pastor Terry Jones to drop it. The church has been told about not only the bigotry within the act, however real world consequences. It will serve as a recruiting tool for terrorists. Nothing can stop it, however some things could be done following the fact should this misguided church fail to listen to reason.

Koran burning off rejected by President Barack Obama

Obama has asked, as outlined by the Los Angeles Times, for Pastor Terry Jones and also the Dove World outreach Center Church to put a halt to burning the Koran. The President maintained that it will only reinforce the idea that Americans are bigots. He also said the Muslim terrorists we are attempting to stop will be aided by the demonstration. The president is not alone in that opinion. Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, issued a similar caution. Petraeus said the “burn a Koran day” will still only be a tool for the Taliban to recruit with. He also pointed out that it will make US Citizens more vulnerable worldwide to attack.

The worldwide reaction

The whole global community isn’t exactly thrilled with this proposed demonstration. The British and French governments, as outlined by CNN, have announced their condemnation of burning the Koran. Interpol, the global police force, opposes it also. Interpol has said it will only increase religious violence global. A spokesman for the Taliban said that if the church goes via with it, the Taliban will begin targeting Christians in retaliation. The Tea Party darling Sarah Palin even weighed in. She asked the church to stop. Even the Vatican believes it to be a poor choice. They’ve already also asked for a stop to the planned burnings.

Jones to think about it

Terry Jones, the pastor of the small church in Gainesville, Fla., has said the group is analyzing the decision. President Obama said he hoped Jones would arrive at the conclusion the demonstration would only be destructive. Religious tolerance is an important part of the fabric of American society.
